Board of directors of Greater Menomonie Area Community Foundation (GMACF) approve grants totaling $6,081 for the grant cycle ending Nov. 1. Payee Services, Inc., received $825 for the purchase of supplies and equipment. The Mabel Tainter Center for the Arts was given $2,000 to help fund the handicap accessible stage entrance in the new annex. The Menomonie Senior Center was awarded $3,356 to support the “Keep Me in the LOOP” project. This year’s grants total more the $22,000, bringing total grants made from the agency’s general endowment fund to more than $120,500. Grant funds are dispersed through the income generated from the organization’s general endowment...

Cherrier, age 101, of Men-omonie, who with her husband owned the Campus Cafe in the 1950s, and who worked many years in the Stout Student Union, died Dec. 2 at the Dunn County Health Care Center in Menomonie... To maintain the Tainter Memorial Theater is the primary goal of the newly formed Little Theater movement in Menomonie. In addition to “saving” the Memorial Theater, one of the few “Gay Nineties” theaters in the nation, a medium of entertainment and recreation for citizens of Menomonie and surrounding areas would also be created. An organizational meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 4, in the Memorial Library. Various temporary committees have started work on this project... Menomonie School Board told it will cost $290,000 to renovate the high school. The total includes $197,000 for general construction and $90,000 for the proposed heating plant...

Menomonie’s tax rate has been determined at $28.64 on each $1,000 of valuation, City Clerk Alice Kenney announced today. Last year the rate was $22.74 on each $1,000. This increase is due in part to the increased amount of money that has to be raised for the county tax. The entire city levy totals $165,346. This total includes the budgets of the city schools, vocational schools, county tax and state tax. In session Nov. 15, the city council adopted its 1934 budget. The budget estimates that $97,640 will be needed to meet the expenses for the coming year, $25,000 of which is for poor relief. A sum of $15,000 is allowed for the fire department...
Menomonie High opens its basketball season next Wednesday evening at Colfax... Misses Esther Persons and Helen Johnson announce the opening of their New Mode Dressmaking Shop in the former dental offices of Dr. C. A. Fuller in the Heller block. The rooms have been redecorated and refurbished, presenting a pleasant appearance. Menomonie’s City Hospital reports gross earnings of $2,337 for November while gross expenses were $2,314. Included in earnings was $1,695 from patients’ board and room while expenses included $185 for administration.

City Treasure Puhl will open the doors of his office in city hall Wednesday, Dec. 16, to the annual collection of taxes. The amount to be paid is $71,665, about $6,000 less than last year... The first of a series of dances given by the Ludington Guard Band will be on Jan. 8 at the armory of Company H. The band boys expect to give six dances this winter. Menomonie’s band is noted for its fine music and may be sure of a large crowd at all the dances...
Alonzo Gray and Dr. R. R. Howison returned Monday from a month’s camping trip at Winter. They left Monday Oct. 24 for Chetek. After a week’s visit there, they started for Winter to await the opening of the deer season. The hunters did not return without their two deer apiece...
Dancers will have no end of amusement for the holidays. The Social Dancing Club has booked dances for Christmas night and New Year’s eve at Smith’s Hall. The Arcade orchestra will play. Better streets for Menomonie got as far as the talking point at a meeting of the common council last evening. Permanent improvements was the theme. The aldermen expressed themselves in favor of street construction that will stand the test of time and traffic. The discussion grew out of the suggestion of Alderman Averill, chairman of the street committee, who held that Menomonie has road building material right at home that might prove suitable. He favored an experiment of a block or so at a time, each year, to test the different kinds of materials. In this way, the wearing quality and cost could be determined. He believes that cinders, gravel and coal tar might be an effective combination...

Martinus Olson of Meridean greeted old friends in the city Wednesday. He is custodian of the ferry at Meridean, which closed a week ago for the winter. In the last season, he says, that 1646 teams crossed the Chippewa River on the Meridean ferry, 350 more than the previous year. Mr. Olson is one of the early settlers at Meridean. He keeps in touch with Dunn County through The News, of which he has been a subscriber nearly 35 years. |
