John Murphy, dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, will serve the institution in two roles beginning Sept. 1.
In addition to his responsibilities as dean, Murphy will serve as federal relations coordinator, working with constituencies both on and off campus in establishing federal priorities for the university.
As federal relations coordinator, Murphy will work with the offices of U.S. senators and congressional representatives, UW System administration, UW System campuses and peer polytechnic institutions to advance federal legislative agendas and to provide strategic assistance on issues surrounding federal activity. He also will work with UW-Stout Research Services to identify federal research opportunities for the campus and coordinate interdisciplinary proposal development.
“A successful university must increase its activity in the area of grants, and, as we developed the polytechnic model, this was part of the discussion,” Chancellor Charles W. Sorensen said. “John is a talented, seasoned dean with the ability to represent all areas of UW-Stout to the appropriate offices and agencies in Washington, D.C.”
“This is an exciting opportunity for me to help the university move forward as Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University,” Murphy said. “It’s important that we work closely with our local, state and national representatives to further the university’s mission and to strengthen our collaborations with the UW System, its campuses and our peer polytechnic institutions.”
Murphy has been dean since the fall of 1997. The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences houses the departments of art and design, English and philosophy, social science, and speech, communication, foreign language, theatre and music. The college offers two majors: a bachelor of fine arts in art and a bachelor of science in technical communications. The art major is one of the largest majors on campus.
Murphy received a doctoral degree in sociology from Southern Illinois University in 1979. He received a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 1968 and a master’s degree in sociology and anthropology in 1971 from Western Illinois University. Murphy also has an associate degree from Joliet Junior College. |
