Great River Rumble begins in Menomonie

DURAND The City of Durand will host the Great River Rumble on Monday, July 28. The Rumble involves more than 100 canoeists and kayakers who will arrive in Durand during the late afternoon and spend the night before continuing their watery journey to La Crosse. Area residents are invited to observe the spectacle of the boats arriving Monday afternoon.
The group will pull in at the boat ramp located at First Avenue in downtown Durand. They will camp overnight in Memorial Park, take showers at Durand High School, eat supper at local restaurants, and enjoy entertainment planned for Monday evening. The group will depart the next morning about 7 am.
The Great River Rumble, an annual river trip, will begin in Menomonie on Sunday, July 27, and end in La Crosse seven days later. Paddlers on the trip will enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery in the Upper Mississippi region.
This canoe and kayak trip will take paddlers about 112 miles down the Red Cedar River, into the Chippewa, then into the Mississippi near Wabasha, Minn., and on through the bluff area to La Crosse. Experienced paddlers are invited to join the trip, which includes camping along the way and a truck to haul gear.
The group will meet in La Crosse on Saturday, July 26, load boats and gear, and travel to Menomonie by chartered bus. Boats will be carried on large trailers loaned by Wenonah Canoe in Winona, the major sponsor of the trip.
Put-in for the first day will be about 8 a.m. on Sunday, the beginning of an eight-mile day from Menomonie to Downsville. These are the plans for the following days:
Monday, July 28 Downsville to Durand, 16 mi; Tuesday, July 29 Durand to Alma, 27 miles; Wednesday, July 30 Alma to Merrick State Park, 19 miles; Thursday, July 31 Merrick State Park to Winona, 11 miles; Friday, Aug. 1 Winona to Trempealeau, 15 miles; Saturday, Aug. 2 Trempealeau to La Crosse, 16 miles; Saturday night Farewell banquet in La Crosse
