The West Wisconsin Dynamo boys’ soccer team took first place at the Eden Prairie Cup XXIII tournament in Eden Prairie, Minn., over the weekend. The young players stepped up and got the job done while some of the veteran players rested injuries in preparation for District playoffs next weekend.
The Dynamo defeated the Bemidji Blizzard in the championship game by a 3-2 score. Tyler Drinkwine opened the scoring after receiving a pass from Ryan Tietz early in the first half. Alex McCracken scored two goals in the second half with assists from Connor Tennessen and Darren Iverson.
The Dynamo defeated Eden Prairie in the semi-final match 2-1. Tennessen scored a goal in the first half with an assist from Sam Chase. Woody Lorenz scored the second goal early in the second half with an assist from Tietz.
The Dynamo finished with two draws in pool play which earned just enough tournament points to qualify for the playoffs. The Dynamo tied Bloomington 1-1. Drinkwine scored the goal with an assist from Dylan Karis. The Dynamo also tied the Sioux River United from Brookings, S.D., with another 1-1 score. Drinkwine scored an unassisted goal in the contest.
Shots were nearly even in every game over the weekend. The Dynamo defense and goalkeeper Justin Blomstrand outplayed the opposition in each game to put the Dynamo in a position to win the tournament.
In league action last week, Chisago Lakes defeated White Bear Lake, 3-1, to claim the Boys U19 Classic 2 title with 25 points and an 8-1-1 league record. The Dynamo finished second with 22 points and a 7-2-1 league record.
The Dynamo faces tough opposition in district playoffs this weekend in Anoka. The team needs to win two games to qualify for the state tournament.
