Merritt, Reckard top Firecracker runs

Mike Merritt, 18, of Menomonie, and Andrew Reckard, 22, of Menomonie claim the top spots in their respective races at the RCMC Firecracker runs in Menomonie on Friday.

Merritt topped the one-mile run field of 121 athletes, finishing with a time of 5:06. Tim Nelson, 34, of Plum City, claimed second (5:29) while Chean Cox, 34, of North Mankato, Minn., was third with a time of 5:36. The top female finisher was Kali Hayden, 15, of Menomonie, who claimed 12th overall with a time of 6:39. Maddy Kalscheur, 14, or Menomonie, was second among the females (17th overall) with a time of 7:06, while Rachel Ausman, 13, of Menomonie, was the third-best female (18th overall), finishing at 7:09. The event’s youngest runner, Mitch Peterson, 4, of Menomonie, finished 77th with a time of 12:46. The oldest runner, Philip McGuirk, 69, of Menomonie, was 45th with a time of 9:02.

The 5k race field of 226 runners was paced by Reckard, who recorded a time of 18:22, while Greg Weyer, 30, of Glenwood City, came in second with a time of 18:39. Nelson rounded out the top three with a time of 18:54.

Leading the women was Ayla Mitchell, 21, of New Richmond, who finished 11th overall with a time of 20:11. Former Menomonie resident, Emma Miller, 20, now of Minneapolis, recorded the second-best female time (13th overall) of 20:26. Jordan Kelch, 16, of Menomonie, was the No. 3 female (19th overall) with a time of 20:46.

Kyra Hadenfeldt, 4, of Menomonie, took the honors of the youngest 5k participant, finishing 157th in a time of 34:52, along with Kristin Hadenfeldt, 31. Dale Seppa, 70, of Menomonie was the oldest competitor, finishing 123rd in 29:30.


Participants in the Firecracker runs hailed from the states of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Arkansas, California, Idaho, Iowa, Virginia, Illinois and Oregon.
