Rockwell J. Flint, resident of Menomonie for 62 years and publisher of The Dunn County News from 1871 to 1908, died Friday night at his home, 919 Ninth St. He was 91 years old. During Mr. Flint’s active years his work and life were closely interwoven with the life of the community. When he came to Menomonie in 1871 from Prescott to engage in the publication of The Dunn County News he began a newspaper career that was destined to win him a statewide reputation. He received his education in the common schools and the country printing office. He entered the office of the Wisconsin State Register at Portage in 1861 to serve an apprenticeship of three years. The next year came the call of President Lincoln and he answered the call, enlisting in the 23rd Wisconsin Infantry. He was mustered out of the service on July 4, 1865.
After the Civil War, Mr. Flint returned to Portage to finish his apprenticeship in the Register office and in 1868, forming a partnership with Edwin H. Weber, the Prescott Journal was purchased. The firm of Flint & Weber published the paper until the plant burned in June 1871. They came to Menomonie in August 1871, purchased The Dunn County News, and the firm continued its publication for 27 years, until the death of Mr. Weber in 1898. Mr. Flint continued his ownership in the paper, part of the time in partnership with the late F. F. Morgan, until 1908, when he was appointed U.S. marshal for the western district of Wisconsin. Returning to Menomonie in 1916, he became associated with The News, and for a long period, until recently, this paper had the benefit of his ripened experience in newspaper work...

This is the first time the city has sent statements to consumers on the entire list. The practice goes into effect with the new water rates which were adopted six months ago to begin Jan. 1. This will be the initial billing of the new rates. Flat rates are now in the discard. All statements are to be figured on the basis of meter readings... R. W.
