University of Wisconsin-Stout's Administrative and Student Life Services division recently concluded this summer's Career Exploration Program.

The program's objective is to give multicultural high school students an opportunity to gain knowledge and experience within the State Civil Service System. UW-Stout's ASLS division initiated the program in 2003, and has hosted it successfully for three summers. Five students participated this summer, working 20 hours a week for nine weeks.

Shoua Vang will be a senior at Menomonie High School this year, and is interested in studying architectural engineering. He worked in UW-Stout's Physical Plant with the engineers and grounds crew, and called the program "a good experience."

Toua Xiong graduated from Lucas Charter School in Menomonie last June. He is considering going on to study as a computer technician. During his experience in Student Life Services, he enjoyed the maintenance and custodial services work the most.

This is Mai Nhia Vue's second year in the program. This summer, she worked at UW-Stout's Business and Financial Services' cashier window. "The program gives us more experience and exposure to different fields," Vue said. She recently graduated from Menomonie High School and will be majoring in political science at UW-Eau Claire in the fall.

Xay Vang also graduated from Menomonie High and finished her second summer in the program. She had the opportunity to work in a number of areas including the Vice Chancellor's Office; Human Resources; Budget, Planning and Analysis; and Police and Parking Services. Vang will be majoring in journalism at UW-Oshkosh.

A fourth Menomonie High graduate, Ela Xiong, worked in UW-Stout's Physical Plant administration.
